Geronimo T-Shirt
Now and then our world asks you to be brave, stand up, and go first into the deep waters. Kindness, here, is the interseciton of strength and tenderness. Be willing to walk into those places where restoratoin is most needed, even when it looks like a crazy, deadly wilderness full of grizzly bears.
In 1948 the Idaho Fish and Game Department chose a male beaver that they named Geronimo to be their test dummy para-beaver. They had just designed a beaver box that would open on landing to be used with army surplus parachutes for sending beavers into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. Apparently, July and August are ideal times to transplant beavers and the best altitude for launching [a boxed beaver and parachute] is between 500 and 800 feet. 76 beavers were dropped at a cost of less than $16 per beaver with only one casualty - it wasn’t Geronimo. To repay him for his flight testing he was the first male beaver, accompanied by 3 females, to be parachuted into the Chamberlain River Basin. Along with 71 other beavers, they went right to work restoring the river ecosystem.
