Operation High Dive T-Shirt
In 1948 Idaho Fish and Game Department needed to transport some beavers into a remote river valley in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. They found that “horses and mules become spooky and quarrelsome when loaded with a struggling, odorous pair of live beavers” and they’re just too heavy for a man to pack into a wilderness. With plenty of military surplus parachutes laying around after WWII, someone had the genius idea to shove them out the back of an airplane. Plan A: weave a willow box and attach a parachute. Several problems with this plan developed, as might be imagined. Plan B: custom built, wooden two-beaver box that opens on landing.
Interested in ecosystem restoration, NASA has found that these areas have become so lush and verdant that they stand out from space. The beavers have restored the river environment which had greatly degraded as all the beavers had been trapped out in the 1800’s. The river was healthier for fish, birds, and became an amazing, natural fire break for the huge forest fires that ravage this part of the west. Other rivers, which have recently began to run dry in July, have been brought back to year-round flow with similar, yet parachute-less, techniques.
Many times life invites our presence to a hard situation in our shattered world. Our kindness, our strength, our tenderness, our humble, un-posturing precense is what is most needed from us in those moments. It is never easy, not what we're trained for, not what feels natural. And yet, your world needs you! Hold onto your parachute and dive in, preferrably alongside a brotherhood or sisterhood.
